A celebrated scientific picture book featuring the distinctive illustrations of mid-century modern artist Charley Harper, whose signature “minimal realism” style reduces animals, plants, and ecosystems into elegant geometric forms and bold color.

First published in 1961 as part of the Giant Golden Book series, the volume became one of Harper’s most admired illustration projects. Its clear visual explanations of biology and evolution made it unusual among children’s science books of the period, and early editions became especially sought after after later revisions softened some of the evolutionary content.

Today the book is widely regarded as one of the finest examples of Harper’s work and a landmark of mid-century educational design.
