A sculptural vintage Dansk “Chess King” Peppermill designed by Jens Quistgaard, crafted in richly grained teak and dating to approximately 1955–1965. Measuring 8 inches tall, this piece beautifully reflects Quistgaard’s celebrated approach to modern design: warm natural materials, strong form, and everyday function elevated into something visually distinctive.

Known as the “Chess King” Peppermill, the design has a bold architectural silhouette reminiscent of a chess king piece, with a rounded teak body, tapered neck, and cross-shaped upper section fitted with shaker holes. The underside retains its Dansk / Peugeot-style grinding mechanism, allowing the piece to function as both a salt shaker and pepper grinder. The teak shows a warm, expressive grain with a deep honey-brown patina developed through age and use.

This piece is part of the Todd Oldham Studio Collection. Todd has long admired Dansk and Quistgaard’s belief in bringing beauty into daily life through thoughtful, useful design. It is a wonderful example of Dansk’s enduring philosophy: objects made for use, but with the presence of small sculpture.

Condition is consistent with age and use. These signs of age add to the character and authenticity of the piece.

A warm and collectible piece of Danish modern tabletop design, admired for its sculptural Chess King form, teak grain, and timeless functionality.
